United Way Fox Cities Youth Board

Members of the Youth Board are juniors and seniors from area high schools in the United Way Fox Cities service area. The Youth Board provides its members with opportunities to increase their involvement, knowledge and understanding of the community volunteer process. Through guest speakers, involvement in projects and general discussions, Youth Board members explore issues affecting today's youth in our community.

Youth Board members become involved in community projects working with such organizations as Habitat for Humanity, the Salvation Army, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the Housing Partnership of the Fox Cities.

In addition to these activities, the Youth Board is responsible for awarding grants to youth-oriented programs in the Fox Cities.

How to Apply for Youth Board Grant Funding back to top

Each year the United Way Fox Cities Youth Board reviews and evaluates grant applications submitted by area youth groups and youth-serving organizations.

In previous years grants were awarded to the following programs:

  • "Camp West" - Appleton West High School - $300
  • "Reduce/Use Less" Festival - Lawrence University - $365
  • "Peer Education for Effective Resistance to Alcohol and Other Drugs" program - Kaukauna High School - $400

A total of $3,000 is available for distribution each year with a maximum of $500 per school or youth-focused organization.

Who Decides How the Money is Distributed? back to top

The Youth Board members do! Once grant applications are submitted all applicants are requested to make a brief presentation to the Youth Board. These presentations take place in February and March at the regularly scheduled Youth Board meetings. The final recommendations are determined in April.

Youth Board members take into consideration the following factors for each program to arrive at the final funding recommendations:

  • Program and fiscal management: Is the program a wise and effective use of the United Way Fox Cities' donor dollars?
  • Program effectiveness.
  • The number of youth served and the programs benefit to youth, school or community.
  • Uniqueness of and need for the program.
  • Quality and accuracy of the application.
  • Program presentation.
  • Level of youth involvement in planning and implementation of the program.

Based on these criteria, Youth Board leaders present the funding recommendations to the United Way Fox Cities Board of Directors at the April meeting. After the Board of Directors has approved the recommendations, notification along with the grant (if approved) is forwarded to the applicants.
